• The last quagga died in an Amsterdam zoo on 12 August 1883, shot by a zookeeper who deemed it worthless. Before extinction, they roamed the Karoo plateau in herds of thousands — so numerous that 19th-century settlers described them as a living carpet across the grassland. Within 50 years, they were gone, hunted to zero for their hides and to clear land for sheep. No other zebra subspecies has vanished so completely in recorded history.
• Unlike their fully-striped cousins, quaggas wore their stripes like a fade — bold black and white on the head and neck, then fading to reddish-brown on the back legs where the stripes dissolved entirely.
