• A psyche butterfly's wings are so transparent that early naturalists thought they were looking at a ghost. The wings contain almost no pigment — just a thin skeleton of veins holding up pure glass, so delicate that a single raindrop can damage them permanently. This transparency isn't camouflage; it's an honest signal: any predator can see the butterfly is there, but so light and fragile that catching it costs more energy than eating it is worth.
• The psyche lays its eggs on climbing plants in the open savanna, and the caterpillar that hatches is a mustard-yellow tube barely the size of a grain of rice. Within weeks it transforms into a butterfly with a wingspan of just 3 centimetres — one of the smallest members of the cabbage white family. For an insect so tiny, it has the same basic body plan as a monarch or swallowtail; it's simply life at the minimum viable scale.
• A psyche's life cycle from egg to death takes about 6 weeks. In that time the butterfly must find a mate, lay eggs, and fuel everything on nectar from flowers in the savanna. No fat reserves, no stored energy — every movement is borrowed from today's meal. This compression means a psyche has less margin for error than almost any other butterfly: a single missed feeding can be fatal.
• The psyche belongs to the Pieridae family, the same group as cabbage whites and clouded yellows — butterflies so common in Europe and Asia that most people have never noticed them. Yet the psyche lives only in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, invisible to billions of people. Its rarity in human awareness is not because it's rare in nature; we simply don't look close enough at savanna grasses to see something this small.
• When a psyche lands on a flower, its compound eyes can detect colours into the ultraviolet range — wavelengths invisible to human vision. The petals it sees are painted with landing strips and secret nectar guides that we cannot perceive.
