Fascinating facts about the Psyche
- Leptosia nina can span just 25-53 mm from wingtip to wingtip, yet its flight looks like a clumsy dance. The butterfly's wings beat while its body bobs up and down, producing a weak, erratic flutter that keeps it hugging the grass. It rarely climbs higher than ground level, staying so close to the earth that it seems to skim the meadow like a tiny snowflake drifting on a breeze.
- The psyche butterfly inhabits a swath of South-Asian terrain stretching from the lower Himalayas, Mussoorie to Sikkim, through central, western and southern India, across Sri Lanka, Assam, Burma, Tenasserim, and onward to China and the Malayan region. It avoids desert tracts.
- Leptosia nina splits into at least ten recognized subspecies, each anchored to a distinct island or region. For example, L. n. aebutia lives on Tanahdjampea and Kalao, L. n. chlorographa inhabits Java, L. n. dione is found in southern Sulawesi, and L. n. malayana ranges across Peninsular Malaya, Singapore, Sumatra, Borneo, Bangka and Biliton.
- An unpublished manuscript by Lionel de Nicéville christened this butterfly the "wandering snowflake," a name that mirrors its delicate white wings dotted with a single large black spot. The upperside is pure white with a black apex and a pear-shaped post-discal spot, while the underside bears faint greenish speckles that can form obscure transverse bands.
- Caterpillars of Leptosia nina are green with a pale glaucous tinge and feed on several plant families, most notably capers. The larvae have been recorded munching on Capparis zeylanica, as well as leaves of Cardamine and Cleome species.
