• From egg to adult, the Australian painted lady races through a 53-day summer life cycle. Green eggs hatch in about three days, releasing a nocturnal caterpillar that feeds under cover of night before spinning a brown pupa that hangs vertically for roughly two weeks.
• Male Australian painted ladies stake out sunny hilltop perches from mid-afternoon until dusk, defending their spot by chasing away rivals and courting passing females.
