• The blue-winged scoliid wasp displays a striking violaceous sheen on its wings that catches the light with a subtle blue-ish reflection. This colouration is a key field mark for the species, which measures between 2.0 and 2.5 centimetres in length. Both males and females share this wing hue, although males can be distinguished by longer antennae and an extra metasomal segment.
• The subspecies S. dubia haematodes can be separated from its close look-alike Triscolia ardens by the number of submarginal cells in each forewing, possessing only two where T. ardens has three. Both subspecies share a similar overall colour pattern, yet the nominate form bears a black second abdominal segment with two yellow spots on the third tergite, features that are absent in haematodes.
• Female blue-winged scoliid wasps dig into the soil to locate beetle grubs, showing a strong preference for the green June beetle Cotinis nitida and, according to some studies, also the Japanese beetle Popillia japonica. After locating a host, the wasp delivers a sting that immobilises the grub and then excavates deeper to fashion a protective cell where she deposits a single egg on the paralyzed insect.
• After a female locates a beetle grub and deposits an egg, the larva pupates inside the host's body. It then overwinters there before emerging as an adult wasp.
• Adult males are active in the late summer months, gathering in the air to form conspicuous swarms. In Virginia these large mating flights have been recorded from mid-August through early September, when the wasps are most abundant. The gatherings are a striking seasonal behaviour that coincides with the period when females are also seeking nectar and mates.
