• At the edge of the world, Wolffsohn's viscacha lives where the air is thin, up to about 4,000 m (13,000 ft) above sea level. Its presence on rocky outcrops in southwestern Argentina and adjacent Chile shows how life can cling to the most barren cliffs, reminding us that even the harshest peaks host specialized mammals.
• When grazing on the high Andes, this specialist herbivore fills its belly with grasses 60.4% of the time, species such as Festuca pallescens, Pappostipa and Poa dominate its menu. The remaining bite comes from the bright berries of Berberis heterophylla, which make up 21% of its intake.
• Stretching nearly half a meter from nose to rump, Wolffsohn's viscacha measures approximately 470 mm (19 in) in body length, while its tail adds another 305 mm (12 in).
• A splash of orange-clay coats the viscacha's back, a hue that stands out against gray rock, while its short black ears and bushy tail complete the look. Even the tail's fur can grow beyond 150 mm (6 in).
