• Weighing only 1.3-1.7 kg, measuring about 60 cm in length and spanning 1.50 m from wingtip to wingtip, this bird is the smallest Old World vulture. Despite its modest size it is a powerful flier, capable of sustained flight without relying on rising air currents.
• The palm-nut vulture's diet is dominated by the fleshy husks of oil-palm fruit and the fruits of raffia palms, an unusual preference for a bird of prey. These palm products constitute over 60 % of an adult's intake and more than 90 % of a juvenile's, supplemented by wild dates, oranges, other fruits, grains and acacia seeds.
• In the air this species looks more like an eagle than a typical vulture because it can keep its wings beating continuously rather than soaring on thermals. Its white plumage with black wing and tail feathers can cause a casual observer to mistake it for an African fish-eagle, yet it lacks the fish-eagle's chestnut body and the Egyptian vulture's white tail.
• Its range follows the presence of oil (Elaeis guineensis) or raffia (Raphia sp.) palms across coastal Africa. The bird occurs from The Gambia east to Kenya and down to South Africa, favouring coastal forests and mangrove swamps below 1 500 m, though it also appears in wet savannas. At every permanently occupied site the distribution is tied to the presence of Raffia palms, which provide both food and nesting habitat.
• No other species shares its genus; it is the sole member of Gypohierax. First described in 1788 by Johann Friedrich Gmelin, it was originally placed in Falco before the new genus Gypohierax was created for it in 1836 by Eduard Rüppell. The species remains monotypic, with no recognised subspecies, underscoring its unique taxonomic position.
