- The stripe-necked mongoose measures between 46 and 50 cm from head to the base of its body, and its tail adds another 32 cm, giving it a notably compact silhouette. Its coat ranges from rusty brown to grizzled grey, and a distinctive black stripe runs laterally along each side of its neck. The animal's short, mostly black tail is grey at the base, while its stout torso and short legs reinforce the compact appearance.
- Male stripe-necked mongooses reach a weight of about 3.1 kg, while females average roughly 1.7 kg. This size difference means males are both larger and more massive than females within the species.
