Fascinating facts about the Sunda Flying Lemur

• A Sunda flying lemur doesn't fly—it glides on a parachute of skin stretched between its limbs so vast it can cross 100 metres in a single leap without flapping once. That membrane, called a patagium, is the largest surface area relative to body size of any gliding mammal on Earth. From treetop to forest floor, it descends at a shallow angle, steering with its tail like a rudder, burning almost no energy to travel distances that would exhaust a climber.
• Despite its name, the flying lemur isn't a lemur at all—it's the last living member of an order called Dermoptera that split from our primate ancestors 60 million years ago. Its closest living relatives are primates and colugos, making it a living link to the deep past. DNA evidence shows it diverged before lemurs themselves did, yet few people have ever heard of it.
• A mother flying lemur carries her entire litter—usually just one pup—in a pouch formed by the patagium itself. She folds her gliding membrane into a cradle, transforming her hunting tool into a nursery. The infant stays tucked inside for three months, safe from predators, until it's large enough to glide on its own.
• Flying lemurs are the only truly folivorous gliders in the world, digesting leaves with a multi-chambered stomach much like a cow does. They visit the same trees on the same nights, browsing selective new growth and fruits on routes through the canopy that never touch the ground. A single individual may visit 20 trees in one night, always in darkness, always without descending.
• The Sunda flying lemur's eyes reflect light in the dark like a cat's, but for a different reason—they're adapted for seeing in near-total blackness. Their retinas are packed with rod cells and lack a dedicated fovea, giving them excellent night vision but making fine daytime detail invisible. They emerge only after dark to hunt, vanishing into tree hollows at dawn where they hang upside down, wrapped in their membrane like living origami.
