• In 1983, a disease wiped out 99% of ochre sea stars along the Pacific coast in just a few months. What followed was ecological chaos: mussels, freed from their main predator, smothered the rocky shores so densely that other species had nowhere to grip or grow. A single animal's collapse rewrote the entire ecosystem. This is how ecologists learned what a 'keystone species' actually means — remove one and the whole arch crumbles.
• An ochre sea star doesn't have a brain, eyes, or blood. Instead, it pumps seawater through its 1,500 tube feet, each one a tiny hydraulic leg with a suction cup at the tip. To eat, it pushes its stomach out through its mouth, slides it between the shells of a mussel, and digests the prey from the outside. It is, in essence, a mobile digestive organ that crawls.
• The ochre sea star can be bright orange, deep red, or pale yellow — the same genetics, different pigments. But colour is not camouflage or preference. Warmer waters favour yellow individuals; cooler seas favour orange and red. Follow the colour and you're reading a thermometer written in starfish.
• A single ochre sea star can live for 30+ years on a rockpool the size of a bathtub, moving less than a metre per year. Yet they are fierce predators: a mussel bed can only support a few starfish before they strip it bare and starve. Their patience is matched only by their hunger, and the balance between the two shapes which organisms survive on the shore.
• Ochre sea stars reproduce by releasing sperm and eggs into the ocean — millions of them, a lottery played by currents and chance. The larvae drift as plankton for weeks, invisible and doomed: fewer than 1 in 10,000 survive to settle on a rock. Yet a single female can produce 2.5 million eggs in a season. This is not efficiency. This is a bet that the ocean will be kind.
