• A northern kelp crab doesn't hunt—it gardens. This 5-centimetre crab deliberately plants and tends patches of kelp and seaweed across the rocky shore, creating a living camouflage so effective that predators swim past without noticing. It's one of the few invertebrates that actively cultivates its own environment, a behaviour called 'gardening' that scientists only began documenting in the 1980s.
• The female northern kelp crab can carry up to 3,500 eggs at once, glued to the underside of her body in a mass called a 'brood pouch' for up to eight months. She must hold perfectly still in safe crevices during this time, unable to feed or move freely—a gamble that works: if even one batch survives to adulthood, she has succeeded where most crabs fail.
• When a predator approaches, the northern kelp crab doesn't run. Instead, it freezes mid-step and pulls its legs tight against its body, vanishing into the weed garden it has spent days assembling. The camouflage is so complete that a diver can stare directly at a crab and miss it entirely—visibility depends entirely on the crab's choice to move.
• A northern kelp crab's preferred food is a type of coralline algae that most other herbivores ignore, one of the pickiest diets among Pacific crabs. This specialisation means it rarely competes with neighbours for food, but also leaves it vulnerable if kelp forests decline—something already happening as sea urchin populations explode along the California and Oregon coasts.
• The northern kelp crab molts—sheds its entire shell—roughly every 18 to 24 months, a window when it is completely soft and defenceless for up to five days. During this time, it hides deeper in the seaweed garden than usual and stops eating entirely, betting that its camouflage will hold while its new shell hardens underneath the old one.
