• A northern harrier's face is a satellite dish. The flat, owl-like disc around its eyes funnels sound waves directly into ear openings positioned asymmetrically on its skull — one higher than the other. This lets the bird pinpoint a vole squeaking under 30 cm of snow from 200 metres away, hunting almost entirely by ear in near-total darkness. They are the only hawks in North America that hunt primarily by sound, not sight.
• Male northern harriers are half the weight of females — a 300-gram male paired with a 650-gram female. This size gap, one of the most extreme among North American raptors, lets each sex hunt different prey in the same marsh without competing. He takes sparrows mid-flight; she takes rabbits from the ground. It's an accidental but perfect division of labour written into their bones.
• Watch a northern harrier hunt and you'll see the lowest-flying raptor in North America. They quarter open grassland at 3 to 5 metres high, tilted at a 45-degree angle, wings raised in a shallow V. This posture — called a dihedral — lets air tumble across the grass and carry sound and scent up to the hunter. They invented a flying style no other large hawk uses, and it works so well they've hunted the same way for millions of years.
• Northern harriers are the only North American hawk that builds a platform nest on the ground, hidden in marsh reeds or prairie grass. Both parents hunt to feed the chicks, but males deliver food mid-air — the female catches it in a flip-turn beneath him, an aerial handoff that looks like aerial refuelling. They've evolved a partnership where separation is built in; they rarely perch together, yet raise broods of 4 to 6 young across the continent.
• In the 1960s and 1970s, DDT nearly erased northern harriers from North America. The pesticide thinned their eggshells so severely that eggs cracked under the weight of incubating birds. By 1975, populations had crashed by 90 percent in the northeastern United States. The ban on DDT in 1972 saved them, and today northern harriers have rebounded so well that they've recolonised marsh after marsh — a direct proof that one chemical law can resurrect a species from the edge.
