New Mexico Spadefoot Toad

Fascinating facts about the New Mexico Spadefoot Toad

• A New Mexico spadefoot toad fits on a ruler, adults measure only 1.5-2.5 inches (3.8-6.4 cm) and tip the scales at 1.7-3.5 ounces (48-99 g). Their tiny size lets them slip into the tiniest sand cracks, escaping predators that can't follow.
• If you ever pick one up, be ready for a surprise: the toad releases a peanut-like smell that can make your eyes water and your nose run. That stench is a built-in alarm, warning anything that might try to eat it.
• When summer rains fill desert puddles, these toads sprint their life cycle: eggs burst into hatching in as little as 48 hours, and the tadpoles can turn into tiny frogs in just 8 days before the water disappears. That speed lets a generation survive in habitats that dry up faster than most ponds.
• A single drop of water can rewrite a tadpole’s destiny. If fairy shrimp are present, some tadpoles grow larger jaws and become tiny carnivores, speeding up their growth and beating the clock of a shrinking pool. This switch shows how flexible their development can be, turning a simple diet into a survival weapon.
• Even as air temperatures climb, the breeding ponds of these toads have gotten cooler, reshaping the male’s mating call. After correcting for temperature, calls are now shorter but faster, a subtle tweak that keeps their reproductive success steady despite climate shifts. It reveals how tiny changes in micro-climates can rewrite animal behavior more than the broader climate itself.
