About the African Common Toad

The African common toad, Sclerophrys regularis, is a robust amphibian whose warty skin blends into the dark olive-brown of savanna and grassland floor. Males measure 62–91 mm and females 70–130 mm from snout to vent, their bodies crowned by large parotoid glands that sit parallel or kidney-shaped. A single vocal sac under the male’s chin inflates as he emits a rattling two-pulse call lasting roughly 0.9 second, echoing from riverbanks where breeding takes place. Their dorsal pattern is a mosaic of dark patches, often symmetrical, while younger individuals sport a paler spinal stripe; black throats in males contrast with the white-to-beige underparts of both sexes. When danger looms, these toads employ a startling bounce, leveraging their webbed hind feet, to confuse predators, then slip into the water, propelling themselves with the same limbs that aid in their aquatic escape. Beyond their striking appearance, African common toads are ecological generalists. They thrive in moist and dry savannas, montane grasslands, forest margins, and even cultivated fields, often nesting near rivers that double as breeding sites. A surprising trait is their ability to inhabit degraded habitats and towns, where they can be found in gardens and other human-altered landscapes, showcasing an adaptability that few amphibians possess. Their presence across a continent-spanning range, from the oases of Algeria and Libya to the Nilotic reaches of Egypt, underscores a resilience that keeps them humming across Africa’s varied ecosystems.
