Chrysolina herbacea

Fascinating facts about the Chrysolina herbacea

• The mint leaf beetle displays a metallic bright green colour that can shimmer with a gold-purple reflection on some individuals. This vivid hue makes it easy to mistake the beetle for the much rarer tansy beetle, as well as for Cryptocephalus hypochaeridis or Chrysolina coerulans, which share a similar green appearance. Its striking sheen therefore often leads observers to confuse these species in the field.
• Female mint leaf beetles show a remarkable range of colours, from golden-red through to deep blue, adding to the species' overall diversity of appearance. These variations sit alongside the basic metallic green tone that characterises most individuals, meaning that a single population can contain a spectrum of hues. Such colour polymorphism is especially noticeable among females, highlighting the beetle's visual variability.
• Adult mint leaf beetles are small, measuring only 8-10 mm in length, while their larvae are stark black, creating a dramatic contrast between life stages. The black larvae feed on mint leaves throughout the summer before overwintering, after which the tiny green adults emerge. This striking colour shift from dark caterpillar to bright beetle underscores the species' distinctive developmental change.
• Although they possess fully developed wings, mint leaf beetles rarely fly, preferring to stay on their host plants. They are most often encountered on mint leaves in damp riverside areas, marshy fields, woodland, parkland and gardens where they feed. Adults are active from May through September, becoming prevalent by late May or early June and remaining visible all summer.
• An adult mint leaf beetle can survive long enough to overwinter twice, giving it a relatively long lifespan for a beetle of its size. The larvae hatch in late June, feed throughout the summer and then overwinter in the soil before pupating. After pupation they emerge as adults, which may again overwinter, allowing up to two overwintering cycles in a single individual.
