• A guereza's stomach is divided into four chambers and ferments leaves the way a cow's does — but backwards. Food moves through their gut so slowly that a single meal takes 24 hours to digest. This lets them extract nutrition from tough forest leaves that would poison most primates, turning the slopes of Kilimanjaro into their private pantry while other monkeys starve beside the same trees.
• Male guerezas have a call so loud it travels 2 kilometres through dense forest — a series of roaring grunts that sounds like a chainsaw run by a ghost. They perform this territorial song at dawn from the tallest trees, a performance so distinctive that researchers can identify individual troops by ear alone from half a kilometre away.
• At birth, a guereza baby is pure white against its mother's black fur — a colour reversal so stark it's visible from across the canopy. The infant stays this brilliant white for up to four months before darkening to match its mother, a living billboard that broadcasts the young one's presence to the whole troop and teaches it group membership through sight before it ever socialises.
• Guerezas live in stable harems of one adult male and 3 to 10 females, a social structure so rigid that a female who loses her male may abandon her own infants and switch troops within hours.
