• A bobak marmot can gain 30% of its body weight in a single month of spring feeding — then vanish underground for 8 months straight without eating, drinking, or even urinating. They're hibernators so extreme that their heart rate drops from 80 beats per minute to 4, and their body temperature plummets to just 5°C. When they emerge in April, they've burned through almost everything they stored, and must breed and feed in a furious sprint before the next winter arrives.
• Bobak marmots live in colonies that can span kilometres and house thousands of individuals, each communicating danger with a call so loud and distinctive that other marmot species recognize it as an alarm. A single sentinel will stand upright for hours, scanning for golden eagles and steppe foxes while others feed. When a predator approaches, the warning call travels colony-wide in seconds — a living telephone system that has saved marmots from ambush for millions of years.
