• A nose so elongated it looks almost comical — yet it's a precision tool. Perny's long-nosed squirrel uses its stretched snout to probe deep into tree bark crevices and conifer cones to extract seeds and insects that shorter-nosed rodents can't reach. This specialisation lets it exploit food sources in the montane forests of Southeast Asia where competition is fierce, turning a weird feature into a competitive edge.
• Most squirrels are noisy, chattering residents of the canopy. Perny's long-nosed squirrel is almost silent — a ghost in the high-altitude forests of Thailand, Myanmar, and southwestern China between 1,500 and 3,500 metres elevation. So little is known about their behaviour in the wild that field scientists still debate basic details of their social habits and breeding cycles.
• Unlike the bushy-tailed acrobats people picture, Perny's long-nosed squirrel has a tail proportionally shorter and less fluffy than most tree squirrels. That trade-off makes sense: in steep montane terrain, a heavy tail becomes a liability. A leaner build and nimble limbs suit the rocky, wind-swept slopes where they hunt for conifer seeds and fungi among moss-covered branches.
• It shares its mountain forest home with dozens of other seed-eating rodents — giant flying squirrels, pygmy squirrels, and multiple chipmunk species all competing for the same pine seeds and acorns. Perny's long-nosed squirrel survives this crowded marketplace by specialising in hard-to-reach food sources and exploiting food patches at slightly different elevations and seasons than its neighbours.
• Listed as Least Concern despite occupying a shrinking range, Perny's long-nosed squirrel has avoided the fate of many Southeast Asian montane species only because it lives high enough to escape the worst of lowland deforestation. But warming temperatures are pushing mountain forest zones uphill — eventually, there will be nowhere left to climb. Its survival depends entirely on intact high-elevation forest that remains largely unmapped by science.
