From a brink of extinction in the 1950s, when only 2,000-3,000 individuals survived, to a thriving count of up to 100,000 by the 1980s, the serow's rebound is dramatic. Its range swelled to 40,000 km², and between 1978 and 2003 the distribution jumped 170%, stabilising the population. This recovery shows how legal protection, combined with post-war forest plantations, can lift a species from the edge of disappearance to a secure, least-concern status.
Japanese serows, with monogamous bonds that persist year after year as each pair defends its territory. Breeding once a year between September and January yields a single fawn in June or July after a 210-220-day gestation. The newborn stands 30 cm tall and reaches adult height within a year, staying with its mother for 1-2 years before venturing out.
Adult Japanese serows stand about 81 cm tall and tip the scales at 30-45 kg, yet their horns only reach 12-16 cm. a key advantage for an animal that sprints up mountains and leaps between rock ledges. famed ninja-like agility.
Serows carve out personal kingdoms of 10-15 ha, marking trees with a sweet-sour scent from large pre-orbital glands that can be seen easily. Overlapping male and female territories, yet each animal maintains a distinct scent-stamped perimeter.
