About the Mokohinau Skink

The Mokohinau skink (Oligosoma townsi) is a sleek, medium-sized lizard that reaches a snout-vent length of up to 95 mm (3.7 in). Its most striking feature is a black-edged teardrop marking on the head, paired with a distinctive alternating black and white pattern along the lower jaw, setting it apart from its New Zealand relatives. Its body is slender and agile, built for darting among the tangled vines and leaf litter that carpet the boulder-strewn beaches of its island homes. By day it skulks in the shadows of broadleaf forest and low scrub, emerging at night to hunt the insects that form the core of its diet, though it will opportunistically nibble on fallen fruit when the chance arises. A surprising trait for a reptile, O. townsi gives birth to live young, a viviparous strategy that allows the newborns to develop safely within the mother’s body amid the unpredictable island climate. Scattered across the Three Kings, Poor Knights, Hen and Chicken, Great Barrier, Little Barrier, and Mokohinau Islands, this skink is a true island specialist. Its habitat, rocky beaches draped in vines, thick leaf litter, and loose scree, offers both refuge and foraging ground, while the low-light, nocturnal lifestyle reduces competition with diurnal lizards. Each night, the skink slips silently over moss-slick stones, its patterned jaw flashing briefly as it snaps up a beetle or moth, embodying the quiet resilience of New Zealand’s offshore fauna. The species’ limited distribution and specialized niche hint at a delicate balance that could tip with any change in its isolated ecosystems…
