About the Jacky Dragon

The jacky dragon (Amphibolurus muricatus) darts across the dry sclerophyll forests and woodlands of southeastern Australia, its pale grey to dark brown body broken by a mosaic of dark patches and pale blotches that often merge into a striking stripe from arm to groin. Five distinct crests crown its head and spine, while a bright yellow lining flashes from its mouth whenever it opens, a vivid cue that has earned it the nickname “blood-sucker.” At an average length of 230 mm, with a tail twice as long as its body, the agile lizard balances on fallen timber or perched on standing branches, its robust hind limbs poised for the characteristic upright sprint it adopts when pursued. Its diet is a bustling buffet of insects, flies, moths, caterpillars, grasshoppers and beetles, snatched with a broad, fleshy tongue, while visual displays such as tail-waving, head-bobbing and the elaborate push-up sequence convey territory and intent among conspecifics. A surprising twist lies in its reproduction: the sex of hatchlings is temperature-dependent, producing females at both low and high nest temperatures and males at intermediate warmth, a nuanced strategy that may fine-tune population dynamics in the variable Australian climate. As the seasons turn, gravid females lay up to eight eggs beneath bark or decaying vegetation, and within weeks the newborns, barely 75 mm long, emerge to join the swift, sun-lit world of the jacky dragon, ready to sprint upright into the next chapter of their brief, four-year lives,
