Lucifer Titi

Fascinating facts about the Lucifer Titi

• The Lucifer titi was originally described in 1914 under the name Callicebus lucifer, giving it its first formal scientific recognition. Later taxonomic revisions moved it to the genus Cheracebus, so it is now correctly called Cheracebus lucifer. This change reflects the ongoing refinement of primate classification as new data become available. The species' name therefore records both its historic discovery and its current placement in modern taxonomy.
• For many years the Lucifer titi was considered part of the collared titi, C. torquatus, and was grouped together with that species. Subsequent studies recognised distinct characteristics that warranted separating it as its own species. This taxonomic split underscores that the Lucifer titi follows a separate evolutionary trajectory from its former conspecifics. The recognition of its uniqueness allows researchers to track its specific distribution and ecology.
• The Lucifer titi occupies a thin band of lowland Amazon forest bounded by three major rivers: the Solimões and Napo Rivers to the north and the Japurá River to the south. Within this corridor it is recorded in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, reflecting a range that follows the interfluve of those waterways. In Colombia the monkey is found up to about 500 m altitude in Putumayo and likely the same elevation in Caquetá.
• The Lucifer titi is a New World monkey whose fur is essentially black, yet it is interspersed with numerous reddish-brown hairs on the back and flanks. These coloured hairs reach from the back up to the crown, so when sunlight hits the animal the overall impression is a distinct reddish glow. This striking pelage helps it stand out among other Amazonian primates, especially in the dappled forest light.
• When a Lucifer titi baby is born it is immediately taken by the male for transport, and it only approaches the female when it needs to nurse. The newborn quickly becomes accustomed to being carried by the male, which allows the pair to keep the infant safe while foraging. In Peru, at 4ºS, births are concentrated in the December to January period, indicating a seasonal pattern that may differ from populations farther north or south.
