Fascinating facts about the Javan Lutung
- A typical troupe is about seven members strong, usually with one or two adult males steering the group. The animal-diversity account adds that groups can swell to 21 individuals yet still keep only 1-2 males, and that females dominate the numbers. Females not only raise their own infants but also look after babies from other mothers, a behavior called allomothering. This cooperative childcare in a forest where predators are scarce but human threats loom.
- Its menu is a leafy buffet: leaves, flowers, buds and occasional fruit, with 15-27 % of the diet being unripe fruit and 10-12 % ripe fruit. The species has a sacculated, multi-chambered stomach that ferments cellulose, a hallmark of colobines, and enlarged salivary glands that kick-start plant breakdown.
- Unlike most mammals, the Javan lutung cannot taste sweetness. Researchers found that, although it carries the TAS1R2/TAS1R3 sweet-taste receptor genes, cells expressing them showed no response to sugars such as maltose, sucrose, glucose, fructose, lactose or sorbitol. Earlier work also showed colobines lack bitterness perception. Without sweet or bitter cues, they ignore sugary foods and readily eat leaves and unripe fruit, a dietary strategy that avoids digestive upset from excess sugars.
- The species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with its range confined to Java, Bali and Lombok. It inhabits interior and edge rainforests from sea level up to 3 500 m, thriving in primary, secondary, mangrove, swamp and mountain forests. In the Dieng Mountains, researchers recorded a density of 23 individuals per square kilometre. With an average lifespan of about 20 years, each loss chips away from a small, isolated population already pressured by hunting and habitat loss.
- Its tail reaching up to 98 cm while the body stays a modest 55 cm. The same source notes head-and-body lengths from 44 to 65 cm and tails from 61 to 87 cm.
