Fascinating facts about the Black Lemur

• Male black lemurs are jet black with orange eyes; females are russet-brown with the same amber stare. This extreme sexual dimorphism — where males and females look like entirely different species — is rare in primates and reversed from most mammals where males show off. In black lemurs, females control 70% of the food resources in their habitat, so they evolved the showier appearance to compete for mates and status.
• A black lemur's scent glands produce a smell cocktail so potent it can mark territory from 50 metres away. Males have enlarged glands on their wrists and tail and will rub their tails together in "stink fights" during breeding season — standing face to face and waving their tails like chemical weapons. The glands contain 25 different volatile compounds, each one carrying a different message about age, health, and readiness to breed.
• Black lemurs are one of the only primates that regularly eat toxic plants without getting sick. They consume fruits from plants that would poison most animals, and their digestive system contains specialized bacteria that break down alkaloids and tannins. This gives them access to food sources unavailable to competitors — but it also makes them vulnerable when their forest shrinks and only toxic plants remain.
• Unlike most lemurs, black lemurs live in female-led groups of up to 13 individuals where mothers, sisters, and daughters stay together for life while males transfer between groups. A single matriarch makes decisions about where the troop forages and when they move, and she gets first pick of food. This social structure evolved because of Madagascar's harsh dry season: cooperation between females maximizes survival for their offspring.
• Black lemurs went extinct across most of their range in just 50 years. In 1973 they inhabited forests across northwest Madagascar; today fewer than 2,500 survive in scattered fragments. The Comoros Islands now hold a founder population of over 2,000 — more black lemurs live there than in their native Madagascar. This accidental refuge reveals both how fragile island species are and how quickly habitat loss can rewrite an animal's entire geography.
