• A pangolin's tongue can be longer than its body. The long-tailed pangolin's tongue is attached near its pelvis and coils inside its ribcage like a fire hose — when unfurled, it reaches 25 centimetres into ant nests and termite mounds. No other mammal has evolved this anatomy. It's a weapon so specialised that pangolins literally cannot chew; their stomach grinds food instead.
• Covered in 140 overlapping scales made of keratin — the same material as human fingernails — a long-tailed pangolin is an armoured insectivore with no teeth and no real predators. Those scales are locked so tightly that a jaguar's bite cannot penetrate. Yet this 2-kilogram fortress is so defenceless against humans that it has become the world's most trafficked mammal, with tens of thousands poached annually for scales sold as Traditional Chinese Medicine.
• The long-tailed pangolin hunts at night using smell alone, nosing through leaf litter on the forest floor in near-total darkness. It can locate a termite mound buried under 10 centimetres of soil and detect a single ant trail by scent. Once it finds food, it excavates with claws sharp enough to pierce wood, then deploys its sticky tongue — coated in mucus from glands the size of its brain — to harvest hundreds of insects in a single feeding session.
• Unlike most mammals, pangolins have no stomach acid. Instead, they swallow small stones and gravel that lodge in their muscular stomach chamber, grinding insects into pulp through a process called gastrolith digestion — the same technique crocodiles and some extinct dinosaurs used. This ancient feeding system allows pangolins to consume insects with hard exoskeletons that would poison many other animals.
• The long-tailed pangolin has a prehensile tail nearly as long as its body, used as a fifth limb to balance while clinging to rainforest branches at night. This arboreal ability sets it apart from ground-dwelling pangolin species. Yet scientists still know almost nothing about its life span, reproduction, or social behaviour in the wild — making it both a rainforest phantom and one of Africa's most mysterious endangered mammals.
