• A Llano pocket gopher moves roughly 4 tonnes of soil per year — more than its own body weight every single day — using teeth that never stop growing and claws designed like pickaxes. It spends nearly its entire life underground in pitch darkness, creating tunnel networks that can stretch over 100 metres. These tunnels reshape grassland hydrology: they funnel water, prevent erosion, and create the exact soil conditions prairie plants need to survive.
• Its name comes from the fur-lined cheek pouches that open on the outside of its mouth — a design that lets it carry food without getting its teeth or tongue dirty. A single gopher can stuff these pouches so full it looks headless. When it returns to its burrow, it empties them with its front feet like reverse vacuums.
• Unlike most rodents, the Llano pocket gopher is solitary and fiercely territorial. A single burrow system belongs to one animal, and intruders trigger immediate combat. Males and females only meet for a few hours during the mating season — they spend the rest of their 3-year lifespan completely alone underground, their entire world a network of tunnels and chambers.
