• A little cormorant's feathers are only partially waterproof — they soak up water instead of shedding it. This sounds like a flaw until you realise it makes them 2.5 times denser than other diving birds, turning their body into a living depth gauge that sinks effortlessly to 10 metres where most fish hide. No air bladder to fight against, no energy wasted on buoyancy. They've traded the ability to float like ducks for the ability to hunt like submarines.
• After every dive, little cormorants haul out on rocks or logs and spread their wings open — not to dry off, but to let water evaporate and their body temperature drop. This odd pose, wings splayed like a drying coat, is so distinctive that fishermen in Asia use it as a clock: when the cormorants stop their wing-spreading, the day is heating up and the fish have moved deeper. The bird's own behaviour predicts the hunt.
• Little cormorants hunt in packs of up to 50 birds that herd fish into tight balls before diving together — a coordinated ambush that works so well Asian fishermen have trained them for centuries, tying snares around their throats to catch the fish but not swallow them. One trained cormorant can bring up 8 kilograms of fish in a single day. The practice vanished in most of the world, but continues in China and Japan as a living medieval fishing technique.
• A little cormorant's eyes see better underwater than in air — their lenses can shift shape to focus through water while most birds' lenses can't. But the trade-off is brutal: on land they're nearly myopic, seeing the world as a blur. They've abandoned sharp vision in sunshine to become precision hunters in murk. It's a choice few animals make, and it works only because they spend 80% of their time in water anyway.
• These birds digest fish bones in under 20 minutes, absorbing the calcium straight into their skeleton. This is why their bones are denser than any other bird's — they don't just get calcium at egg-laying like other birds do, but continuously throughout life from their prey. A little cormorant's body is literally built from the skeletons of ten thousand fish. What they eat becomes what they are.
