• A male little bustard can inflate his neck to three times its normal width in less than a second, creating a white bouncing display that looks like a furry tennis ball launched from the grass. He'll jump 30 centimetres in the air, produce a loud popping sound from his throat, and repeat this 10 to 20 times in a row to attract females — all while barely moving from one spot. It's one of the most explosive courtship routines in European birds.
• During migration, little bustards fly over 6,000 kilometres between their breeding grounds in Spain and Portugal and their wintering grounds in North Africa — crossing the Sahara Desert twice a year. A bird weighing just 600 to 900 grams undertakes the same journey that would require a human to run a marathon every single day for two weeks without stopping.
• Little bustards are vanishing from southern Europe at a rate of 2 to 3 per cent each year, driven almost entirely by one thing: agricultural intensification. Modern farming removes the wild grasslands and weedy field margins where they hunt insects and lay eggs, turning their habitat into sterile monoculture in just 20 years. Spain and Portugal now hold 80 per cent of the world's remaining population.
• Males are 40 per cent smaller than females — one of the largest size differences of any game bird — yet they're the sex that does almost all the display work. The smaller frame lets them leap higher and move faster during courtship, while larger females stay hidden and make all the breeding decisions. It's a complete inversion of the bodybuilding males you see in most bird species.
• A little bustard's diet shifts dramatically with the seasons: in spring and summer they're almost entirely insectivores, eating beetles, ants, and grasshoppers to fuel breeding; by autumn they switch to seeds from weeds and grasses, storing energy for the long migration south. This dietary flexibility means habitat loss doesn't just remove their home — it removes their seasonal pantry.
