• A lesser kudu's spiral horns grow in perfect mathematical coils — up to 16 turns of horn that follow the golden ratio, the same spiral pattern found in galaxies and seashells. Males use these helical weapons to fence with rivals in ritualistic duels where they rarely fight to the death, instead treating combat as a test of symmetry and health. A male with tighter, more perfect spirals wins mates without drawing blood.
