• A hedgehog the size of a golf ball can produce ultrasonic calls up to 40 kHz — higher than a bat's echolocation and inaudible to human ears. The lesser hedgehog tenrec uses these clicks to navigate through Madagascar's tangled forest floor at night, bouncing sound off roots and leaf litter like a tiny, spiny sonar system. No other tenrec does this. It's a hunting strategy borrowed from creatures that fly, deployed by one that shuffles.
• When threatened, a lesser hedgehog tenrec vibrates its spines so fast they rub against each other and hiss — the vertebrate equivalent of setting off a rattlesnake alarm without actually being venomous. The sound is loud enough to startle a predator and makes the animal seem larger than it is. Then it curls into a ball no bigger than a walnut, spines pointing outward. During these months its heart rate plummets and it barely moves, living off fat stores from the brief wet season. This extreme shutdown lets a 450-gram animal survive a habitat where food vanishes half the year. It's closer to death than sleep, and it works.
• The tenrec's quills are modified hairs, not true spines like a porcupine's, and they're covered in tiny barbs that catch on skin and fur. When predators bite down, the quills fragment and stay embedded, causing infection or working slowly deeper into tissue. This makes them more effective than solid spines at causing lasting damage — a lesson in how biology often favours clever engineering over brute strength.
