- Weighing less than a penny-coin, the little forest bat can tip the scales at under 4 g (0.14 oz), and in some locales the males are as light as 2.5 g (0.088 oz). Adults range from 2.5 to 5 g (0.088-0.176 oz) and sport forearms under 30 mm (mean 28.5 mm, 1.12 in). Its wingspan stretches to about 15 cm (5.9 in) while the body tops out at 5 cm (2.0 in).
- Found only in south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, the little forest bat thrives in a patchwork of eucalypt woodlands, forests, rural farms, semi-rural fringes and even pockets of urban greenery. This habitat flexibility lets the species occupy everything from towering old-growth trees to backyard gardens, showing how adaptable a creature under 5 cm long can be.
- Females of this species reach sexual maturity within their first year, while males need a second year before they can join the breeding game. Scientists think males wake from winter torpor to mate, and each pair produces a single pup in the spring months of October and November.
- When hunting, the little forest bat emits search-phase calls that sweep between 42.5 kHz and 53 kHz, a pitch more than twice the highest tone humans can hear. Because these frequencies sit well above our hearing range, researchers must bring a bat detector into the field to eavesdrop on its acoustic world.
- Although it looks like a handful of other Vespadelus species, the little forest bat can be told apart by subtle differences in finger bone lengths and, in males, a uniquely shaped baculum. Some taxonomists even suspect hidden, cryptic species lurk within what we now call Vespadelus vulturnus.
