Fascinating facts about the Lemur

• A ring-tailed lemur's tail is longer than its entire body — up to 60 centimetres of black-and-white striped flag that acts as a balance beam in the canopy and a flag pole on the ground. When troops move through the forest, mothers hold their tails straight up so infants following behind can spot them in the dense undergrowth. The tail is so thick with muscle and fat it can store energy for lean seasons, the way a camel stores water.
• Lemurs are the only primates that cannot see red. Their eyes lack the photoreceptor needed to detect the colour, yet they thrive in forests exploding with ripe red and orange fruits. Instead they see ultraviolet light — invisible to humans — which highlights the ripest fruit and the scent marks other lemurs leave on branches. They live in a different colour world than every other primate on Earth.
• Female lemurs outrank every male in their troop, always eating first and choosing mates freely — a reversal seen in less than 10% of all primates. This matriarchy likely evolved because female lemurs need extra calories to breed; in Madagascar's unpredictable seasons, the hungriest animal must have priority at the fruit tree. Males follow females, not the other way around.
• A lemur's nose is so chemically sensitive it can detect scent in concentrations as faint as parts per trillion — roughly equivalent to spotting a single drop of lemon juice in an Olympic swimming pool. They have a specialised vomeronasal organ in the roof of their mouth that reads pheromones and territorial markers. Before any leap through the canopy, they stop to smell the branch ahead, decoding messages written in scent from neighbours and rivals.
• Lemurs split from other primates 63 million years ago and reached Madagascar on floating debris after the island broke away from Africa — a journey that likely took weeks across open ocean. Once isolated, they diversified into over 100 species, filling ecological roles that monkeys and apes occupy elsewhere. Today 95% of lemur species are found nowhere else on Earth, making Madagascar a living laboratory of primate evolution that rewrote itself the moment humans arrived 2,400 years ago.
