• A Japanese squirrel's ear tufts grow to 25 millimetres each winter — fuzzy antenna that vanish completely by spring. These seasonal tufts aren't just decoration; they're a thermal antenna system, helping the squirrel sense temperature shifts and predict the coming thaw before it arrives. Most mammals shed and regrow fur, but few animals give themselves a complete seasonal accessory overhaul.
• Japanese squirrels spend the autumn stockpiling acorns in hundreds of hidden caches across their territory, a behaviour called scatter-hoarding. They bury each nut singly in loose soil, then forget about 60–70 percent of them — and those forgotten seeds become the next generation of oak, beech, and chestnut trees. A single squirrel can plant thousands of trees in its lifetime without intending to, reshaping the temperate forests of Japan with its forgetfulness.

• Japanese squirrels are endemic to Japan — found nowhere else on Earth — yet genetic studies show they split from Chinese squirrels only 3–4 million years ago, when land bridges connected East Asia during ice ages. Today their survival depends almost entirely on how much temperate forest Japan preserves; they cannot spread to other continents, and cannot adapt if their specific forests disappear.
