Fascinating facts about the Leafy Seadragon
- Leafy seadragons are barely longer than a school ruler, reaching just 20-24 cm (8-9.5 in) as adults, though some reports note they can grow up to 50 cm with an average around 30 cm. Their modest length hides a complex armor of hard, exoskeletal rings and a toothless tube-like snout that lets them suck up tiny crustaceans. This size-to-armor balance lets them drift like seaweed while staying protected from predators, a key survival trick in their kelp-rich homes.
- A male leafy seadragon can carry up to 250 bright pink eggs on a brood patch on his tail for nine weeks before they turn ripe purple or orange and hatch over 24-48 hours. Only about 5 % of those eggs survive to become independent fry, each starting life with a tiny external yolk-sac that fuels them for a few days.
- Leafy seadragons inhabit only southern Australian waters, from Wilson's Promontory in Victoria west to Jurien Bay, 220 km (140 mi) north of Perth, usually in clear water 5-15 m deep among kelp-covered rocks, seagrass meadows, and sand patches down to 50 m. Their strict range and preference for vegetated habitats mean that declining kelp and seagrass beds, lost for at least two decades, push the species toward Near Threatened status.
- Since 1987 South Australia, 1991 Western Australia, and 1995 Victoria have fully protected leafy seadragons, and the species is listed under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. These legal safeguards, combined with their status as the marine emblem of South Australia, giving the fish a fighting chance despite its slow swimming and high vulnerability as a newborn.
- Leafy seadragons can linger motionless for up to 68 hours, yet when they do move they can travel as fast as 150 m (490 ft) per hour, covering several hundred metres before returning to a familiar spot using a strong sense of direction.
