• A leafy seadragon's leaf-like appendages aren't for swimming — they're camouflage so perfect that divers pass within arm's reach without spotting one. The fronds are dead skin extensions that grow from the animal's body, mimicking the seagrass and kelp it drifts among. They don't move or flex; they're pure disguise, and they work so well that scientists studying wild populations struggle to count them accurately.
• Male leafy seadragon pregnancy lasts just 9 to 10 days — shorter than human morning sickness. The female deposits her eggs into a brood pouch on his tail, where he oxygenates and regulates the salt content for each one, acting as a living incubator. He can carry up to 250 eggs at once, yet releases only 5 to 6 babies into the ocean, and most don't survive. No parental care follows — the newborns are instantly abandoned.
