About the Pacific Leaping Blenny

The Pacific leaping blenny, Alticus arnoldorum, is a diminutive marvel of the western and southern Pacific reefs, where males grow to a modest 8 centimetres (3.15 inches) and flaunt striking orange-red dorsal fins crowned by prominent head crests. Their bodies are sleek and adapted for a life clinging to limestone outcrops, where they scrape benthic algae from rock surfaces with comb-tooth jaws, turning the hard substrate into a buffet of green nutrition. Yet it is their locomotion that truly captivates: when startled, these blennies launch themselves from hole to hole, leaping across exposed rock in a display that gave rise to every common name. This extraordinary ability stems from a unique tail-twist, an axial 90-degree rotation that propels them forward on land, a behaviour observed only in Alticus and its close relative, Andamia, and which earned the two genera the label “terrestrial.” Beyond their acrobatic escapes, Pacific leaping blennies have been seen foraging and even courting mates while perched on dry rock during mid-tide, surviving several hours out of water as long as moisture is retained. Their life is a delicate dance with the tide, for a falling tide strips the moisture they need, and they quickly dry out and suffocate.
