Fascinating facts about the Leafy Sea Dragon
- The leafy seadragon is the sole species in the genus Phycodurus, giving it a unique taxonomic standing. It belongs to the family Syngnathidae, the same family that contains seahorses, pipefish and other seadragons. Its generic name comes from the Greek words for "seaweed skin", while the species name eques derives from the Latin word for horse. This combination of names reflects both its leafy appearance and its distant relation to horse-like seahorses.
- Leaf-like skin flaps cover the body of the leafy seadragon but they are not fins and produce no thrust; they exist solely to disguise the fish as seaweed. These protrusions give the animal the appearance of floating kelp, allowing it to drift unnoticed among seaweed and seagrass. When it swims the illusion is maintained, making its movement look like a piece of seaweed drifting.
- During breeding the female deposits up to 250 bright pink eggs onto a specialised brood patch on the male's tail. The eggs cling to this patch where they receive oxygen until they begin to develop, a process that can take about nine weeks depending on water conditions. When the embryos are ready, the male agitates his tail for 24-48 hours, shaking and rubbing it against seaweed to help the young hatch.
- A leafy seadragon can stay perfectly still for days, remaining in one spot for as long as 68 hours. Individual leafy seadragons have been observed remaining in one location for extended periods of time (up to 68 hours), but will sometimes move for lengthy periods.
- Its gill openings are tiny circular slits that cover tufted gills, a feature unlike most fish. Another unique feature is the small, circular gill openings covering tufted gills, very unlike the crescent-shaped gill openings and ridged gills of most fish species.
