• A bluefin trevally can accelerate from 0 to 40 mph in less than a second — faster than a cheetah on land. They hunt using a technique called balling, where they corral fish into a tight ball near the surface, then take turns ramming through it at top speed. A single attack lasts milliseconds. Slow-motion footage reveals they're calculating the exact angle to maximize prey density with each strike.
• Their eyes sit on the sides of their head like most fish, but bluefin trevally have evolved a moveable lens inside the eye itself — a biological zoom lens. It allows them to shift focus from distant prey to near objects without moving their head, giving them a hunting advantage in murky reef water. Few other fish have this adaptation.
