• Large treeshrews spend most of their time on the forest floor, making them the most predominantly terrestrial of all treeshrew species. They forage on the ground but still climb trees for brief periods, thriving in primary tropical rainforest while also tolerating swamp and secondary growth forests. This ground-dwelling habit puts them directly in the sights of predators like marbled cats, leopards and clouded leopards, shaping a life of constant vigilance and seed-spreading that sustains lowland forest regeneration.
• The large treeshrew measures between 165 and 321 mm from head to body and carries a tail 130-220 mm long, with hind feet only 43-57 mm. Adults weigh 154-305 g and their snout stretches more than 37 mm from eye to tip, giving them a probing nose for digging.
• A large treeshrew's menu is dominated by earthworms, centipedes, millipedes and beetle larvae, with fruit making up less than 30 % of intake even when figs are abundant. It digs just beneath the soil surface using its claws and long snout, then spits out any indigestible seeds or plant fragments it swallows.
• Both male and female large treeshrews reach sexual maturity at about one year old, after which they form monogamous pairs that breed from August to November. Females almost always give birth to two helpless young, which stay in the nest for just under a month before being weaned at 25-33 days.
