• Among primates, only the Philippine slow loris produces venom — a toxic oil secreted from glands under its arms that it mixes with saliva before biting. The venom is strong enough to cause anaphylactic shock in humans. Scientists still don't fully understand why a tree-dwelling insect eater evolved this weapon, but males use it during mating season, rubbing it on their tails and bodies to compete for females.
• A Philippine slow loris burns so little energy that its metabolic rate is 40% lower than other primates of similar size — it moves through the canopy at 0.15 metres per second, slower than a human infant crawling. This glacial pace is a strategy: it lets the loris hunt insects without being noticed, and survive on fewer calories in a rainforest where insects aren't always abundant.
• Its eyes are so enormous relative to body size — each one nearly as wide as its brain — that they point forwards like a human's rather than sideways like most lemurs. This binocular vision lets it hunt in near-total darkness, spotting insects invisible to other animals. But the trade-off is that it cannot move its eyes from side to side; instead it swivels its head almost 180 degrees.
• The Philippine slow loris has a prehensile tail that acts as a fifth limb, gripping branches with enough force to support its entire weight. Poachers historically cut off these tails before selling the animals as pets, assuming the tail would grow back — it never does, leaving captive lorises unable to balance or move naturally through trees.
• Fewer than 10,000 Philippine slow lorises remain in the wild, and nearly all of them live in just three forest reserves in Mindanao. Habitat loss from logging and agricultural expansion have crushed their population since the 1980s. The illegal pet trade continues to drain wild populations — a loris that takes 2–3 years to rear to adulthood can be captured and sold for $50, making it economically rational for impoverished collectors despite the species' vulnerable status.
