Fascinating facts about the Sumichrast's Vesper Rat
- At just 10 to 13 cm long (3.9 to 5.1 in) and weighing only 220 to 245 g (7.8 to 8.6 oz), Sumichrast's vesper rat is a pocket-sized rodent that still manages a splash of colour, a reddish-orange back with creamy-white belly, and a full-length fur coat that even covers its tail. Its large eyes sit in a narrow ring of black hair, while compressed, curved claws and a thumb-like first toe turn every branch into a ladder.
- Unlike most rats, Sumichrast's vesper rat lives almost entirely above ground, building nests 3 to 22 m (9.8 to 72.2 ft) up in evergreen and semi-deciduous forests from sea level to 1,600 m (5,250 ft). Its nests are irregular piles of twigs and leaves placed in tree hollows or branch forks, each with a hollow central cavity about 10 cm (3.9 in) across, and older nests are often stacked to form multi-layered complexes.
- A typical home range for a Sumichrast's vesper rat spans about 70 m (230 ft) across, and within that space the nocturnal herbivore forages on figs, seeds of Jacquinia pungens and borage, and even the poisonous young leaves of Daphnopsis americana, though it avoids the central part of the leaf. Occasionally it supplements its diet with a few moths.
- Mating occurs year-round, and after a gestation of 30 to 38 days a litter of one to three pups arrives, each weighing a mere 4.5 g (0.16 oz) and measuring about 8 cm (3.1 in). Newborns cling to their mother's teats for the first two weeks, can crawl after two days, open eyes by fifteen to eighteen days, and are weaned at roughly three weeks. Sexual maturity is reached at around 75 days, and individuals have been known to live up to five years in captivity.
- Across its range, from southern Jalisco and Veracruz in Mexico down to central Panama, Sumichrast's vesper rat occupies nine recognized subspecies, each tied to a specific geographic slice of the forest belt. This fine-scale subdivision, coupled with its presence from sea level up to 1,600 m (5,250 ft).
