• Lake whitefish spawn in water so cold it would kill most fish — they release eggs and sperm on lake bottoms in November and December at just 2–4°C, then abandon them entirely. The eggs sit dormant under ice for 5 months, hatching in spring when the water warms. No parental care, no nest, no second chances. It's a gamble that works: whitefish can live 25 years, and a single female lays up to 40,000 eggs in her lifetime.
• Their teeth are so small they're almost invisible — Lake whitefish have no teeth at all in their jaws, only a 'sieve' made of gill rakers so fine it catches zooplankton 0.2 millimetres across. They're living strainers, filtering the lake's smallest life forms with the precision of a microscope. This is why they thrive in the coldest, deepest zones where giant predators starve.
• In the Great Lakes, whitefish were once so abundant they fed entire Indigenous nations and built colonial economies — but commercial fishing collapsed the populations by the 1960s, dropping from millions of tonnes to near extinction. Today's comeback is real: Lake Michigan's whitefish are returning to pre-industrial numbers thanks to a ban on lamprey imports and strict quotas.
