Fascinating facts about the Kivu Duiker
- A bold black stripe runs from the nose to the forehead, giving the black-fronted duiker its name and setting it apart from its relatives. It carries short, pointed horns only 4-12 cm (1.6-4.7 in) long, which both males and females use for defense. Weighing just 14-18 kg (31-40 lb) and standing 43 cm (17 in) at the shoulder, this compact antelope packs a surprising amount of power into a small frame.
- The black-fronted duiker thrives from sea level all the way up to 3,500 metres (11,500 ft), showing a tolerance for a huge altitude span. It is especially common in the wettest spots, marshes, riverbanks and stream margins, where its elongated hooves help it navigate soggy ground without sinking. This flexibility lets the species occupy both lowland swamps and high-altitude cloud forests.
- Its range stretches across central and west-central Africa, but a lone population lives far apart in the Niger Delta of eastern Nigeria. From southern Cameroon the species spreads eastward to western Kenya and southward to northern Angola, threading through a mosaic of forests, swamps and mountains.
- Pairs of black-fronted duikers defending a shared territory marked with secretions from facial glands. Within that area they carve out habitual paths that link sleeping sites to feeding spots, allowing them to move day or night.
- Scientists recognize six subspecies of the black-fronted duiker: fosteri, hooki, hypoxanthus, kivuensis, nigrifrons, and rubidus (the Ruwenzori duiker).
