• That massive neon beak accounts for a third of the toucan's total length but weighs almost nothing — it's hollow like a honeycomb, with struts of bone crisscrossing inside to keep it rigid. The beak is so sensitive it can detect the temperature of a fruit from centimetres away, helping the bird pick ripe food from a distance before flying in. A toucan can regulate blood flow to its beak to shed or absorb heat, turning it into a biological thermostat.
• Keel-billed toucans sleep in a posture that looks like yoga gone wrong: they tuck their massive beak under their wing, fold their tail over their head, and compress their whole body into a ball smaller than a grapefruit. • Keel-billed toucan chicks hatch blind and naked in a hollow tree cavity, and both parents take turns incubating the eggs for 16 days while literally suffocating in the enclosed space — they can only rotate in and out because the opening is tiny enough to protect chicks from predators. The parents lose up to 20 percent of their body weight during breeding season, fasting between feeding runs, a cost that forces them to skip breeding in years when fruit is scarce across the rainforest.
