Fascinating facts about the Karoo Bushrat
- The Karoo bush rat constructs a stick lodge that can reach more than one metre in height, anchoring it to the branches of a desert shrub. Only a single lodge is built on each bush, so the structure is a unique refuge for the resident pair. Its interwoven sticks create a barrier against the harsh climate and lurking predators, giving the rat a safe place to rest and store food.
- Inside the stick lodge the Karoo bush rat enjoys a markedly steadier climate than the open desert. In winter the nest stays about four degrees Celsius warmer than the surrounding air, while in summer it remains fourteen degrees cooler than the scorching outside temperature. This buffering dramatically reduces the temperature swings that would otherwise challenge the rat's survival.
- Karoo bush rat pups are weaned after just eight days, after which they quickly reach reproductive maturity. Females can begin breeding at five weeks old and males at six weeks, allowing rapid population turnover. Litters are modest, typically comprising two to three semi-precocial young, which develop swiftly within the protective lodge.
- The Karoo bush rat is a herbivore that feeds on foliage and succulent stems taken from a surprisingly diverse pool of sixty plant species. In the cold months it relies almost entirely on succulents, while the arrival of spring sees it adding non-succulent and annual vegetation to achieve an even mix. Throughout the year the rat cuts off lengths of plant material and hauls them back to the entrance of its stick lodge.
- Desert habitats in South Africa expose the Karoo bush rat to temperature swings from below zero degrees Celsius in winter to more than forty degrees Celsius in summer. To survive these extremes the rat builds a surface lodge of interwoven sticks anchored in desert shrubs, a behaviour that creates a stable micro-climate.
