• A genetic analysis carried out in 2021 revealed that the mole population on Hainan Island is genetically distinct enough to be treated as a separate species. This finding meant that the name Mogera insularis now applies only to the Taiwanese form. Consequently, the insular mole is considered endemic to Taiwan and no longer includes Hainan in its range.
