• A Himalayan tahr can cling to near-vertical cliff faces at 4,500 metres — higher than the clouds that obscure most mountains below — with hooves that work like climbing shoes. Their hooves have a rubbery core that grips wet rock the way a gecko's feet grip glass. They've never been photographed slipping, even on ice slopes that send other mountain goats tumbling. This grip is so precise it lets them escape predators by scaling surfaces that look impossibly sheer to human eyes.
• Male tahrs grow a long, shaggy coat that drapes almost to the ground — a fashion choice that looks decorative but is pure physics. This coat can weigh 5 kilograms and insulates them so effectively that snow settles on their backs without melting, turning them into walking snowdrifts. In the extreme cold and wind of the high Himalayas, that insulation is survival. They shed it completely once a year, revealing a sleeker body underneath.
• A tahr herd is run entirely by females; males are tolerated but have no say in where the group goes or when they move. The oldest female leads all decisions about grazing routes, water sources, and which cliffs to climb during storms. She may lead the same family group for 15 years, making her the keeper of the group's geographical knowledge — a living map of where to find food in the harshest season.
• Tahrs can digest plants that would be toxic or indigestible to most hoofed animals, thanks to a stomach with four chambers that ferments tough leaves and grasses into nutrients other animals can't extract. This gives them access to sparse, fibrous plants at extreme altitude where other herbivores starve. They eat almost anything that grows above the tree line — mosses, lichen, sedges — converting landscape that looks barren to most animals into a full pantry.
• In the 1970s, tahrs introduced to the mountains of New Zealand thrived so explosively — from fewer than 20 animals to over 15,000 — that they now outcompete native plants and destabilise slopes, triggering rockslides and erosion that damage the very ecosystem that sustains them. It's a mirror of their success: the same grip and hardiness that keeps them alive on Himalayan cliffs made them an invasive force so powerful that New Zealand now has to cull thousands each year to prevent ecological collapse.
