This iridescence serves as a visual ID card: females can identify individual males from 50 metres away based on which colours dominate their plumage, without ever hearing them call.
• The Himalayan monal digs for food like a chicken on amphetamines, scratching and turning over soil up to 1,000 times a day to unearth beetle larvae and earthworms hidden centimetres below the surface. In a single territory, a monal's foraging can flip and churn enough earth to reshape the alpine meadow's topography, inadvertently aerating soil and dispersing seeds across the Himalayan slopes at 3,000–4,000 metres elevation.
• When a male Himalayan monal courts a female, he doesn't sing — he screams. His call is a harsh, metallic shriek that carries across fog-shrouded valleys and sounds nothing like the soft whistles of related pheasants. Ornithologists describe it as sounding like a door hinge being forced open, and it's so loud other monals can hear it from 500 metres away, making him audible across entire mountainsides where visibility is often under 50 metres.
• Himalayan monals lay between 4 and 7 eggs, each one roughly the size of a golf ball and buff-coloured with sparse brown spots. The female incubates alone for 27 days while the male stands guard on a rocky perch above her, abandoning the nest site entirely once chicks hatch — a trade-off that lets him defend breeding territory against rival males instead of helping feed mouths.
• The Himalayan monal is the national bird of Nepal, but its population remains genuinely unknown — no comprehensive census exists.
