Bronze Sunbird

Fascinating facts about the Bronze Sunbird

• Bronze sunbirds use a jumble of twittering notes followed by cleaner whistle sounds, most often heard during the early morning and mid-day.
• A female bronze sunbird can build an oval-shaped nest in as little as five days, using a cocktail of fern fronds, dry grass, bark shreds, bracken, leaves, lichen and even spider silk to stitch it together. The entrance is hidden by a tiny flap, and the whole cup hangs from a branch inside a dense bush. This rapid construction lets her lay eggs from September through May, with a peak between October and December.
• The species lays just one or two eggs, which the mother broods for 16 to 21 days before the chicks fledge. After fledging, the young return to the nest for another week, becoming fully independent after about two to three more weeks. Such a brief parental investment period means the female handles almost all of the early life care.
• Bronze sunbirds feed on a very narrow menu: nectar plus a suite of insects like ants, beetles, bugs, wasps, flies and termites. Their long, thin, well-curved bill is perfectly shaped to sip deep flowers while also snatching tiny prey. This diet links them tightly to flowering plants and insect abundance in their remote savanna and forest habitats.
• Unlike many forest birds, the bronze sunbird isn’t threatened; it actually thrives where Protea farms have spread in Zimbabwe. Though Protea flowers are poisonous to humans, they flood the landscape with nectar that the sunbirds ignore the toxin and exploit. This unexpected boost shows how a cultivated plant can unintentionally support a wild pollinator.
