Jackal Buzzard

Fascinating facts about the Jackal Buzzard

• Jackal buzzards can weigh up to 1,700 g, making them one of the world's heaviest Buteo hawks. One survey of 55 unsexed birds recorded weights from 790 to 1,370 g, while seven males weighed 865-1,080 g and eleven females 1,150-1,700 g. An additional female measured about 1,700 g, and eighteen individuals averaged 1,059.4 g. Their wingspan stretches 127-143 cm, averaging 131.9 cm, comparable to the augur buzzard. Such size gives them a bulky body and large bill, traits that let them tackle prey larger than most falcons, but also slow their flight speed.
• During hunting, jackal buzzards fly slower, a consequence of their large wing area. In a study of five raptor species, a single jackal buzzard showed an average flight speed of 22.65 ± 5.55 km/h and a maximum of 48.93 km/h, the lowest of the group. Their prey, mainly small mammals, are slower and larger than the swift prey of falcons, so high speed isn't essential. The broad wings reduce speed, allowing precise drops onto ground-bound rodents. This hunting style lets them exploit open grasslands where they perch on trees or roadside poles before swooping down.
• Jackal buzzards build massive stick nests that can grow beyond a meter in diameter after repeated use. The initial nest measures about 60-70 cm across and 35 cm deep, but successive seasons see it expand to over 1 m (3.3 ft). Two creamy or bluish-white eggs, each about 60.7 mm × 47.7 mm, are laid three days apart and incubated solely by the female. After roughly 40 days the chicks hatch, and they fledge after 56-60 days, becoming independent at 70 days. This prolonged breeding timeline mirrors other tropical raptors, reflecting slower development compared with temperate Buteos.
• Jackal buzzards thrive across a wide altitude range, from sea-level rock outcrops to the 3,500 m (11,500 ft) peaks of Lesotho. Their distribution covers most of South Africa, central Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, southern Mozambique and extreme southeast Botswana. Though they prefer grassland edges for hunting, they adapt to both arid deserts and lush, high-rainfall zones. Nest density varies dramatically: a Cape Peninsula study recorded only 2.8 pairs per 100 km², while a Lesotho highland survey found up to 22.2 pairs per 100 km², showing how local habitat features drive population clustering.
• Human infrastructure poses a hidden danger to jackal buzzards, with wind turbines causing the most recorded fatalities among raptors in southwestern South Africa. More than half of wind-energy stakeholders are unaware that jackal buzzards top the collision list. Road traffic also claims many lives; in the Karah, a disproportionate number of this species die on highways compared with other raptors. Over two years, over 10 % of all raptor admissions to a Pietermaritzburg rehabilitation centre were jackal buzzards, many from vehicle impacts.

About the Jackal Buzzard

The Jackal Buzzard (Buteo rufofuscus) is a striking raptor endemic to the rugged landscapes of southern Africa, where its presence is often heralded by its distinctive plumage. This medium-sized bird of prey exhibits a remarkable palette of colors, with rich chestnut and dark brown feathers that contrast sharply with its pale head and underparts. Typically found in open grasslands, savannas, and mountainous regions, the Jackal Buzzard possesses keen eyesight that allows it to spot potential prey from great heights. Its broad wings and relatively short tail enable agile flight, making it a master of soaring and gliding. A notable behavior is its tendency to perch prominently on exposed rocks or fence posts, where it surveys its territory for small mammals, birds, and reptiles, showcasing both its predatory prowess and territorial nature. Engaging in a complex repertoire of vocalizations, the Jackal Buzzard communicates with a series of whistles and screams, often accompanying its majestic aerial displays. While it primarily hunts alone, it has been observed to share food with its mate, highlighting a fascinating aspect of its social behavior. One surprising trait of the Jackal Buzzard is its ability to adapt to various habitats, thriving not only in pristine wilderness areas but also in agricultural landscapes, where it often preys on rodents attracted to crops. This adaptability underscores its resilience in a changing world, making the Jackal Buzzard a captivating subject for wildlife enthusiasts and ornithologists alike.
