• A vulture that weighs less than a chicken and has a face so bare it looks unfinished — the Egyptian vulture uses tools like no other raptor on Earth. They pick up rocks in their beaks and hurl them at ostrich eggs to crack the shell, then drink the yolk. This isn't instinct they copy from parents; individual vultures invent their own techniques, and some never learn the trick at all. Tool use in birds was supposed to be a parrot-and-crow thing. This bird rewrote the rulebook.
• In 1970 you could see Egyptian vultures from Spain to India, from Africa to China — roughly 100,000 birds. By 2004 that number had collapsed to fewer than 10,000. The culprit wasn't habitat loss or hunting: vultures across South Asia were eating livestock poisoned with the painkiller diclofenac, which turned their kidneys to sludge within weeks. A single dose of medication meant for cows wiped out 95 per cent of the population in some regions. It's one of the fastest declines of any large bird on record.
• Egyptian vultures don't breed until they're 5 years old, mate for life, and have only one chick every two years. That means a breeding pair produces maybe 40 chicks across their 40-year lifespan — if nothing goes wrong. Compare a golden eagle, which raises two chicks annually: even with the same lifespan, it produces four times as many offspring. When a species breeds this slowly, even small losses become extinction sentences. Their biology gave them no safety margin.
• These vultures migrate across 30 countries every year, tracking the seasonal bloom of carrion from the equator to the Mediterranean. A single bird might spend winter in West Africa, spring in the Sahel, summer in the Balkans — and if it survives all three journeys, it has to dodge power lines, pesticides, and hunters in a different country every few months. They're not residents of one place; they're the living threads connecting ecosystems across three continents.
• The Egyptian vulture's white plumage with black wings and a bald yellow face made them sacred to pharaohs 3,500 years ago — their image appears in tombs and on temple walls as symbols of motherhood and protection. Ancient texts show they nested in the cliffs of the Nile Valley in their thousands. Now fewer than 50 pairs breed in Egypt itself.
