Fascinating facts about the Guppy fish

• A male guppy's tail fin can make up 80% of his body length — imagine a man whose hair stretched 4.8 metres behind him. These extravagant tails are pure sexual advertisement, so metabolically expensive that males with the biggest displays often live shorter lives. Females choose mates based on tail size and colour pattern, but only if the male survives long enough to flash it.
• Guppies gave evolution a live audience. In the 1950s, ecologist John Endler moved wild guppy populations between streams with different predators and watched in real time as body size, colour, and tail shape shifted within 15 years. Spots appeared. Tails shrank. It was Darwin's finches happening in a laboratory tank, proving that natural selection works fast enough to see.
• Female guppies can produce babies without a male — sort of. They store sperm internally for up to 10 months, releasing litters every 21 to 28 days, up to a dozen pups at a time. A single female can repopulate an empty stream in weeks. This is why guppies colonised almost every freshwater stream in Trinidad and Venezuela the moment humans created new habitats.
• Guppy colour patterns are heritable but plastic — shaped by both genes and the light environment where they grow. Babies reared under red light develop more red spots; those under blue light shift toward blue. The same genes produce different looks depending on the wavelength they develop under, a molecular reminder that evolution writes in the margins of development.
• Wild guppies evolve personality types that match their habitat. In high-predation streams, males stay drab and cautious, hanging near shelter. In low-predation streams 10 kilometres upstream, the same species evolves bold, colourful males that roam freely. Move a cautious fish downstream and its descendants become bold within 5 generations — not because the fish changed, but because bold genes suddenly had better survival odds.
